Winter of 1961 in Hamburg, Germany. The Beatles are playing at the Star Club and are staying at a nearby apartment along with a number of other musicians. After a night of heavy drinking, Harrison comes ‘home’ drunk and goes to bed in his clothes. In the middle of the night, he turns to his side, vomits all over the floor and then tells Peter Best (the then Beatles drummer) to clean up. Best refuses and so does the cleaning lady that came in the morning.

The floor, still covered in vomit, begins to gather cigarette butts, gum wrappings, beer cans etc. and soon becomes a site to behold as musicians from all over the building gather to see that which everyone called “The Thing”. Still, nobody bothers to clean up.

Two weeks later and as “The Thing” had its own reputation in the area, Horst (the manager of Star Club) goes up the stairs and into the apartment swearing. While being furious he takes a shovel and throws “The Thing” into a trash bin! In some kind of funeral march, the Beatles along with the other musicians and groups that stayed in the building, follow Horst and the binned “Thing” towards the garbage. Photos of this event do not seem to exist but even if they do, they sure haven’t seen the light of day.
